Use cases
Characters with or without spaces — which one do you need?
Most platform limits count everything, spaces included: X’s 280, SMS’s 160, meta descriptions’ ~160. "Characters without spaces" mainly appears in translation and copywriting invoicing, where some agencies price per character excluding whitespace, and in certain academic submission systems. This tool shows the with-spaces figure by default and can toggle, so check which rule your target actually uses before trimming.
One subtlety: emoji and non-Latin characters can count as more than one "character" in some systems. SMS is the classic case — one emoji switches the whole message to UCS-2 encoding and drops the limit from 160 to 70 characters.
