Unicode italics and where they come from
Real italic type is a typeface design β a separate set of letterforms drawn with a calligraphic slant, developed in Venice around 1500 by Aldus Manutius to fit more text on a page. Unicode italics are something else entirely: mathematical italic characters, encoded so equations could distinguish an italic variable from an upright constant, which the internet then borrowed for style.
The practical consequence is that these characters look italic everywhere without any formatting. The trade-off is that they are not text your reader can search, and they carry mathematical semantics under the hood.
What italics traditionally mean
Italics are not just decoration β they carry conventions worth respecting. Style guides use them for titles of long works (books, films, albums, ships), for foreign words not yet naturalized into English, for technical terms on first use, and for genuine emphasis. Overusing italics for emphasis is the classic amateur tell: if everything is emphasized, nothing is.
