The 2,000-year-old placeholder text

Lorem ipsum is scrambled Cicero. The passage traces to "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (45 BC), a treatise on ethics, discovered as filler-text’s source by Latin scholar Richard McClintock in the 1980s after he chased down the unusual word "consectetur". Printers had been using versions of the scrambled passage since the 1500s; Letraset transfer sheets spread it through 1960s graphic design, and Aldus PageMaker installed it permanently in desktop publishing.

The scrambling is the point: because it is not readable Latin, nobody stops to read it — reviewers judge the layout instead of the words, which is exactly what a design review needs.

When to use lorem ipsum — and when real text is better

Placeholder text excels early: wireframes, typography specimens, spacing experiments. It misleads later: lorem ipsum’s word lengths and rhythm are Latin, so a navigation bar that fits "consectetur" may overflow with "recommendations", and a design approved with filler headlines can fall apart under real ones twice as long. The working rule most design teams land on — swap in realistic content before stakeholder review — exists because clients remember the fake text more than the layout. Generate what you need here in paragraphs, sentences, or words, then replace it deliberately.
