How it works

  • Type or paste the text you want to cross out.
  • A combining strikethrough line is added over each character.
  • Copy the crossed-out text and paste it anywhere that supports Unicode.

Use cases

Show edits or corrections without deleting the original words.
Cross out old prices or to-do items in posts and chat.
Add humor or emphasis on social media.
Style bios and comments with crossed-out text.

How a line gets through plain text

Plain text has no formatting, so strikethrough here is built from a combining character: U+0336, the combining long stroke overlay. It is placed after each letter and draws itself across the character before it — the same mechanism that puts an accent on é. Stack one after every character and the individual strokes join into what looks like a continuous line.

That "looks like" is doing some work. Because each stroke belongs to its own character, rendering quality depends on the font: most modern systems join them seamlessly, but some fonts leave hairline gaps between letters. Line breaks also interrupt the effect, which is why this tool leaves them alone.

What strikethrough communicates

Strikethrough carries a specific meaning that formatting alone cannot: this was true, and now it is not. That is why it works for crossed-out prices, completed to-do items, visible edits ("I definitely did not eat the last slice"), and the particular brand of internet humor that says the quiet part and then pretends to retract it. Preserving the original words while marking them as struck is the whole point — deleting them would lose the joke.

Two practical notes. Platforms with their own markdown — Discord, Slack, WhatsApp — support ~~tildes~~ natively, and that is the better choice there because it renders cleanly and stays accessible. Use Unicode strikethrough where no formatting exists at all: Instagram bios, plain usernames, comment fields. Be aware that screen readers announce or ignore the combining marks rather than conveying "struck through", so the meaning is lost for those users.

FAQ

How is strikethrough text created?

The tool adds a Unicode combining long-stroke overlay after each character, which renders as a line through the text without changing the letters themselves.

Does strikethrough text work everywhere?

It works in most apps that support Unicode combining marks, including many social and chat platforms. A few apps may not render it, so test before posting.

Can I remove the strikethrough later?

The original letters are preserved underneath the line, but it is easiest to simply regenerate from your plain text when you need it back.
