Uppercase is not as simple as it looks

For English, converting to uppercase is a clean one-to-one swap. Other languages are messier, and the classic example is German ß: its traditional uppercase form is SS, so "straße" becomes "STRASSE" and the character count changes. Turkish has dotted and dotless i (i/İ and ı/I), so naive uppercasing corrupts Turkish words. These edge cases are why "just uppercase it" has caused real bugs in real software for decades.

A related quirk: uppercasing is not always reversible. Once "iOS" becomes "IOS", nothing in the text tells you which letters were originally lowercase — so converting case is a one-way trip unless you keep the original.

When all caps helps and when it hurts

Legitimate uses are mostly functional: normalizing data for comparison (postcodes, country codes, reference numbers), meeting a form requirement, matching a design system that renders labels in caps, or making a short headline shout deliberately. Legal disclaimers are traditionally set in caps because some jurisdictions require "conspicuous" text.

For anything longer than a few words, caps hurts. Reading research consistently finds all-caps text slower to read, because lowercase letters have ascenders and descenders that give words distinctive shapes, while capitals flatten every word into a rectangle.
