WhatsApp Font Generator
Generate styled text for your WhatsApp name, About status and group subjects in nineteen Unicode styles. For messages, WhatsApp already has built-in formatting — asterisks for bold, underscores for italic — and this page explains when to use that instead.
Whether you call it whatsapp font generator or whatsapp fonts, this free tool handles it instantly in your browser.
Options
Where styled text actually works on WhatsApp
Styled text is Unicode characters, not a font, so whether it survives depends on the field you paste it into. WhatsApp treats these fields differently.
| Field | Styled text | Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Messages | Partly | — | Unicode styles display, but WhatsApp has native formatting that is a better choice — see below. |
| About / status text | Works | 139 chars | Styled characters work here, and native markup does not, so this is where Unicode is genuinely useful. |
| Profile name | Works | 25 chars | Accepts styled characters. |
| Group subject | Works | 100 chars | Works normally. |
Use WhatsApp's own formatting instead, where you can
WhatsApp has built-in formatting markup. In messages it is the better choice than Unicode styling: it keeps the text as real letters, so search still finds it and screen readers still read it as words.
*text*→ bold_text_→ italic~text~→ strikethrough```text```→ monospace
Before you use it anywhere that matters
A screen reader announces styled characters one at a time by their Unicode name, so a styled bio can be unreadable to anyone using one. Search engines and in-app search generally will not match styled text either. For a display name that is usually an acceptable trade; for anything you want found or read aloud, it is not.

How it works
- Your text becomes Unicode characters that already look styled, so they display in WhatsApp without any font support.
- They work in your profile name, the About status, and group subjects — none of which support WhatsApp’s own formatting markup.
- Inside messages, WhatsApp has native formatting: *asterisks* for bold, _underscores_ for italic, ~tildes~ for strikethrough and triple backticks for monospace.
- In messages the native markup is the better option, because it keeps the text as real letters that search and screen readers can still handle.
Use cases
WhatsApp is the one platform where you mostly should not do this
Most apps offer no way to format text, which is the whole reason Unicode styling exists. WhatsApp is different: it has had native formatting for years. Put asterisks around a word for bold, underscores for italic, tildes for strikethrough, three backticks for monospace.
Inside a message that is strictly better than styled characters. The text stays as real letters, so WhatsApp’s search can find it later and a screen reader reads it as a word. Styled Unicode throws both of those away to achieve the same visual result.
Where Unicode styling is the only option
The native markup only works in message composition. It does nothing in your profile name, your About status or a group subject — type *bold* there and you will see the asterisks.
Those three fields are where a generator earns its place. The About status in particular is a natural fit: 139 characters, purely decorative, and seen by everyone with your number.
The native markup, in full
Bold is *text*. Italic is _text_. Strikethrough is ~text~. Monospace is three backticks either side. You can combine them, so *_text_* gives bold italic.
Two details catch people out. The markers must sit directly against the text with no space inside, and WhatsApp hides the markers once the message sends — so if you see asterisks in a sent message, there was a stray space.

FAQ
How do I make text bold in WhatsApp without a generator?
Wrap it in asterisks: *bold* renders as bold. WhatsApp also supports _italic_ with underscores, ~strikethrough~ with tildes, and monospace with three backticks on each side. This is built into the app and works in every chat, so for messages you do not need a generator at all.
Then when should I use styled Unicode characters on WhatsApp?
In the fields where the native markup does not work — your profile name, your About status and group subjects. Typing *bold* in your About status shows the asterisks literally rather than formatting the text, so Unicode styling is the only way to get a styled look there.
Why is native formatting better than styled characters in chats?
Because it keeps your message as ordinary letters with formatting applied on top. That means WhatsApp’s in-app search can still find the message, and a screen reader still reads it as words. Unicode styling replaces the letters themselves, so the message becomes unsearchable and is announced character by character.
What is the character limit for a WhatsApp About status?
One hundred and thirty-nine characters. Your profile name is limited to 25, and a group subject to 100. Styled characters count as one each, so styling does not reduce how much fits — except for the spaced style, which adds a real space after every character.
Will styled text send correctly to every contact?
The characters transmit reliably, but rendering depends on the recipient’s device having the glyphs. Bold, italic and script are supported almost universally. Gothic, outline and squared are missing on many older Android builds, where they appear as empty boxes — so avoid them for anything that needs to be read.
