Why Base64 exists (and why it is not encryption)

Base64 solves a transport problem: many old systems — email being the classic — only reliably carried printable ASCII characters. Base64 re-expresses any bytes using 64 safe characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, + and /), three input bytes becoming four output characters, which is the source of its 33% size increase and its trailing = padding. Email attachments still travel as Base64 today, as do inline images in CSS and the payload sections of JWTs.

Crucially, Base64 is encoding, not encryption — anyone can reverse it instantly, with zero keys. Treating Base64 as security is a classic beginner mistake; it hides text from casual glances only.

Recognizing and working with Base64

Base64 has a distinctive look: long runs of mixed-case letters and digits, occasionally + and /, often ending in = or ==. The padding tells you the original length modulo 3 (== means one final byte, = means two). When debugging APIs, decode suspect strings — configuration secrets, cookie values, JWT segments — with our Base64 to Text tool; JWTs in particular are just three Base64 sections joined by dots, and the first two decode straight to readable JSON.
