Joining f to other letters
Coming in
Low upstroke that must travel the full height to the headline before the loop begins.
Going out
Low baseline exit, despite the descender.
- π»β―
fe
The low exit rises into the e loop. Common in "few", "fell", "offer".
- π»π»
ff
Two full double loops. The descenders must not tangle β space them wider than usual.
- π»πΎ
fi
Keep the i dot clear of the f upper loop.
Common mistakes with cursive f
Making the two loops the same size, which looks top-heavy and unbalanced.
Fix: The upper loop should be noticeably larger than the lower one.
Crossing the lower loop in the wrong direction, so f reads as a g or q.
Fix: The lower loop of f swings right and forward; g and q loop left and back.
Omitting the descender entirely, leaving a letter that looks like l or b.
Fix: f must break the baseline. It is the only lowercase letter that occupies all four guide lines.

About the letter f
f is the hardest lowercase letter in cursive, and the reason is simple arithmetic: it is the only one that uses all four guide lines. Every other letter lives in two or three. That also makes f the letter that most often collides with the line of text above or below it.
The two loops run in opposite directions β the upper opens left, the lower opens right β and reversing either one produces a different letter. An f with a left-opening lower loop is a g. This is worth drilling deliberately rather than hoping it settles.
In words with a double f, the descenders are the problem rather than the loops. "Coffee" and "offer" are the standard practice words precisely because they force you to space two descenders without tangling them.
