Common mistakes with cursive g
Looping the descender to the right, which produces an f-like or j-like shape.
Fix: The g descender always loops left, back under the oval.
Making the descender as long as the ascender of a tall letter.
Fix: The descender is roughly the same depth as the x-height, not the full ascender height.
Leaving the oval open, so g reads as y.
Fix: Close the oval before starting the descender.

About the letter g
Cursive g and cursive q are mirror images in the one place that matters: the direction of the descender loop. g loops left, q loops right. Nothing else distinguishes them, which is why both appear in the standard list of hardest-to-recognise cursive letters alongside I, J and Z.
The oval is drawn exactly as for a, c and d, so g costs nothing extra once the oval family is solid. All the difficulty is below the baseline.
Depth is the common fault. A g descender that reaches as far below the baseline as an l reaches above it will tangle with the next line of writing, and in a notebook that quickly makes a page unreadable. Keep the descender shallow β about one x-height below the baseline.
Learn these together: descender letters
These letters share the same base motion as g, so practising them as a group is faster than taking them alphabetically.
