They paste into most bios and display names, but usernames on Instagram, X, TikTok, Discord and Roblox reject them, and screen readers announce them character by character.

Common mistakes with cursive l

Closing the loop completely, so l reads as a straight line or a t without its cross.

Fix: Keep visible white space inside the loop.

Making the loop too wide, so l starts to look like e scaled up.

Fix: The loop is narrow and tall β€” roughly a third as wide as it is tall.

Stopping the upstroke short of the headline.

Fix: l is a full-height letter and must match b, d, f, h and k exactly.

The handwriting guidance above is about forming the letter with a pen. If what you actually want is script-style text to paste into a bio or a username, use this instead.

About the letter l

Cursive l is the foundation of the loop family. b, h and k are all built from this exact motion with something added, so time spent on l pays off four times over. Most handwriting programmes introduce it immediately after the oval family for that reason.

Its one real failure mode is the collapsed loop. Written quickly, the upstroke and downstroke can land on top of each other, leaving a letter that reads as the digit 1 or a capital I. The fix is to bring the downstroke slightly right of the upstroke rather than retracing it β€” l loops, d retraces, and that distinction is worth keeping deliberate.

l also connects more easily than almost any other tall letter, because it exits at the baseline rather than the midline. "ll", "le", "la" and "li" all join without a visible seam, which is why double-l words like "little" and "yellow" are standard practice material.

Learn these together: loop letters

These letters share the same base motion as l, so practising them as a group is faster than taking them alphabetically.
