Common mistakes with cursive m

Making the three arches different widths, so m looks lopsided.

Fix: Count the arches as you write. Even spacing matters more than perfect curves.

Writing only two arches, turning m into n.

Fix: m has three arches, n has two. Say "three" as you write it.

Pointing the tops of the arches.

Fix: Arch tops are rounded. Pointed tops make m read as a run of v or w shapes.

About the letter m

m is the width test of cursive. Three arches of identical width is harder than it sounds, and the error compounds: an m that starts wide and narrows reads as a tired scrawl even when every individual curve is well formed. Writing "mm" and "minimum" as drills exposes the problem immediately.

The arch motion is shared with n, and m is simply n with one more hump. If your n is reliable, m is a counting exercise rather than a new shape.

Capital M differs from lowercase mainly in height and in the third arch, which is conventionally drawn slightly shorter than the first two. That taper is what keeps the capital from looking like a fence.

These letters share the same base motion as m, so practising them as a group is faster than taking them alphabetically.
