About the letter p
p is the only descender letter that does not loop below the baseline β it goes straight down and retraces straight back up. g, j, q, y and z all loop, so p is the exception, and writers who learn the descender family as a block often add a loop to p out of habit.
It is also b turned upside down, in the sense that both have a bowl on the right of a vertical stem. The difference is which side of the baseline the stem extends to. Practising "bp" together makes the symmetry obvious and the two harder to confuse.
Because the stem is retraced, p shares b and d's problem of a doubled, darker stroke. Lighten the return pass.

These letters share the same base motion as p, so practising them as a group is faster than taking them alphabetically.
